Life Threatening Emergencies

Poisoning or Overdose

In the event of poisoning or overdose dial 999 directly for an ambulance.

Urgent Problems Outside Surgery Hours

Please contact NHS24 on 111. A full staff of highly trained receptionists and nurses will take your call initially, and either give advice or arrange for you to see the doctor. You may be given an appointment time to attend the local out of hours centre, or you may be visited at home. NHS24 can also directly arrange an ambulance if you need to be assessed urgently at Accident and Emergency.

Urgent Problems During Surgery Hours (8am-6pm)

If you have a serious problem, and need advice urgently, please telephone the receptionist. Please give the receptionist as much information as possible to pass to the doctor. The doctor will assess your problem and phone you back. Alternatively, the doctor may advise you to call an ambulance directly, or attend the Accident and Emergency Department, if that is more appropriate.

Minor injuries eg sprains or burns can be managed by the GP at your surgery. If your injury is more severe, or if you are worried you may have a broken bone, please go directly to Accident and Emergency at the Royal Infirmary. If you are not sure about your injury, you can phone the surgery for advice from your doctor or practice nurse. If you have a serious problem and need advice urgently during surgery hours (8.00 am – 6.00 pm) please tell  the receptionist. In the event of poisoning  or overdose dial 999 for an emergency ambulance, or go directly to Accident and Emergency.

At night and at weekends medical cover is provided by NHS24. Contact number is 111

Wheelchair users will find easy access at both sites. There are toilets for the disabled at the Conan Doyle Medical Centre.
