We provide Primary Medical Services under a 17c contract. This means that we offer General Medical Services including surgeries five days a week, visiting at home and emergency cover during the day. We also offer additional specialised clinics in diabetes, coronary heart disease, care of the elderly/multiple needs, respiratory disease and sexual health (including psychosexual counselling).

E-mail Policy

If you wish to contact the surgery by e-mail you can do this via the “Comments” section of the web site. However, please note that e-mail should only be used for non-urgent and non-clinical matters. The practice cannot guarantee the security of personal or confidential information you send us in an e-mail and the doctors will not respond by e-mail to messages requesting medical advice.

Save a Life

Portobello Surgery and Conan Doyle Medical Centre supports the NHS Lothian Organ Donation campaign to increase registration locally. Please visit www.nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk/signuptosavealife/ for more information. Organ donor registration leaflets are also available in the surgery.

Problems or Complaints

If you are unhappy with the service you have received or if you have any problems with the services of the practice, please speak to the Practice Manager. There is also a suggestions box in reception or you can email you comments via the “Comments” page on the web site.

Practice Development/Protected Learning Time

In Lothian surgeries participate in regular learning events. These are held on Wednesdays, approximately every two months. During protected learning, our surgeries are closed and all calls are passed to NHS 24 who provide medical advice and cover.

Private Medical Services

We do not provide private medical care. Some services, however, fall outside the NHS and for these a charge is made. These include BUPA/PPP forms, private medical certificates and various special examinations for sports, school or employment. These appointments are undertaken only outside surgery times. Current costs are available at reception or from our secretary.
